A Closer Look on Bilingualism
Bilingualism isn't unprecedented to numerous individuals and in numerous pieces of the world. For whatever length of time that there are individuals who move from far away nations to better places on the planet, bilingualism will exist, and prosper. This has become a greater reality in todayââ¬â¢s world where various nations are brought nearer by innovation, and globalization has gotten ordinary, particularly to progressively prosperous and industrialized nations where transients tend to gather.Hence, societies become interrelated and dialects are not, at this point restricted to their territories of inception. Indeed, it is typical for some individuals to utilize two dialects, or much more, over the span of everyday living, some by decision and some by necessity. As confirm by studies and perception made by researchers and instructors, bi-or multilingualism exists since people are not constrained to get familiar with a solitary language throughout his/her lifetime.Although there we re no examinations that have decided what number of dialects an individual can learn in his/her lifetime, there was no doubt that it should be possible, given the relative straightforwardness by which youngsters learn languages. The cerebrums of a person hold unlimited prospects. It's anything but a container that has restricted limit; it can assimilate a great deal more data (Alladina 6). Thus, it isn't astounding that an ever increasing number of individuals are learning and utilizing distinctive languages. It isn't unprecedented to see an individual who utilizes an alternate language at home, in school or in buiness, a specific language is utilized relying upon the fitting situation. As we endeavor to investigate various features of bilingualism, it would be generally coherent to clarify quickly the significance of bilingualism and how it is ordinarily seen so as to offer a superior understanding regarding why it has such extraordinary effect on the society.More significantly, this paper will bargain on the general impacts of bilingualism on kids, grown-ups and families, just as the impacts of schools, its frameworks, and society everywhere to individuals who are bilingual, and bad habit versa. We will likewise dive on the decisions that diverse bilingual-foundation families have or have made as to raising their kids as bilingual or monolingual, and the resulting impacts of these choices. We will reveal insight into these worries, incompletely, by experiencing the individual encounters of three people, with various degrees of bilingualism, who were met only for this paper. We will inspect how bilingualism had an influence in their lives. Their bilingualism came about because of various conditions encompassing them as they were growing up that were principally established from their families. For occurrence, the primary interviewee and her folks relocated to Norway from Pakistan, where she was really brought up until she was eight years of age, the subsequent one h as guardians whose first languages were not the same as one another, while the last interviewee was embraced from Colombia when she was eight years of age.

Space Robots
Space Robots Its been a while since I introduced you to MIT (my way, of course). Since then, Ive been on the ETOOMUCHADVENTURE side of things the curse of a bloggers life, having so much to blog but not enough time to write about it ;) But summers winding down now. The time has come to catch you guys up on what Ive been doing. I will start it with a post about my UROP ^_^ It all started back in March, when I began poking around for summer UROPs. Im Course 6-2 (Electrical Engineering and Computer Science), with a heavy interest in biology. I had intended to get a bioEE UROP that is probably my ultimate field of study but then something awesome caught my eye. amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;br /amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt; I am not sure if my first response was I WANNA PROGRAM A SPACE ROBOT I WANT A SPACE ROBOTTT!!!!!! or just simple drooling, but I was hooked on this idea. In a nutshell, there exist satellites called SPHERES (Synchronized Position Hold Engage and Reorient Experimental Satellites) in the International Space Station. They were originally inspired by Star Wars and designed to be used for research on topics like flight formation and docking. Nowadays, they also serve as vital tools in Zero Robotics, a series of competitions for middle- and high-schoolers, culminating in a NASA-coordinated tournament on the ISS. The goal of this UROP? To write a game, teach it to middle schoolers, and help them code a player. It sounded fantastic, and became my number one UROP choice. As you might guess, I was lucky enough to join the team of 10 UROPs that made this happen. Our first order of business? amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;lt;br /amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;amp;gt; Okay, so this wasnt actually our first order of business, but I was paid to launch bottle rockets in Killian Court :D Our first order of business was actually taking a retreat to a glorious little cabin in Maine to get to know each other, where I also first learned to use a chainsaw. But, for the month of June, we worked together to code the game the middle schoolers would play, worked out a curriculum to help them learn math and physics along the way, and added activities to keep them engaged. Thus, bottle rockets! In July, I started mentoring at my school the closest one of all, East End House. ^ That was my walk to work every day. I began to teach my awesome kiddos some fundamental concepts vectors, Newtons Laws, etc and eventually started programming in C. In the course of a month, we were supposed to turn over a player to compete against the other schools during the finals in the ISS. For some inspiration, we also brought them over to MIT, showing them our flat floor, where we demod some code on some robots we had on the ground the joys of making ice cream with liquid nitrogen and MITs very own wind tunnel where it was, in fact, windy. July went by in a whirlwind. Coding, the MIT visit, coding, sweat blood and tears, coding, nightmares about semicolons (curse you, C!), and more coding. Our group was especially pressed for time and with so many clever and interesting ideas, we had not nearly enough time to test them out. It was a bit insane, but these kids were good we turned in a player, and waited anxiously for a little over a week for the competition to take place. We couldnt wait to see our code in space. The day came, and we rolled into 34-101. It was so exciting! All the teams were abuzz with competition fever. We were greeted by our friendly neighborhood astronaut, as well as many of the people who were behind the scenes, coordinating MIT and the schools to make this all happen. And then, the competition began. Since the summer and fall versions of the game are quite similar (though the fall is much more difficult, given that its made for the high school level), I cant actually tell you many details abut the game. But lets just say, its quite fun to see how the satellites communicate, coordinate (whee flight formation!), and act out clever strategies against each other all from our code. After rounds upon rounds of watching our code come alive after a month of coding it the tournament was over. Not too shabby ;) And that was it. With some final words of congratulations and praise from our new favorite astronaut, the tournament was over. It was time for celebration, laughs, and eating cake (not a lie). The kids were full of energy, having just seen their code no really in space (some of them didnt quite believe it until they got there). Eventually, we, the UROPs, said goodbye to our schools, and gathered up for a celebration dinner. In all the craziness of the past two months, we had done it. Yeah, summer was pretty awesome :D

Anatomy Diagram Learn the Parts of a Tarantula
Classifying tarantulas (Familyà Theraphosidae) requires extensive knowledge of their external morphology, which studies the form of an organism by looking at the parts of its body. Knowing the location and function of each part of a tarantulas body makes it easier to study and understand them, even when not trying to perform scientific classification. This diagram outlines the anatomy of a tarantula. Tarantula Anatomy Diagram Opisthosoma: One of two main parts of a tarantulas anatomy and the rear section of the body, often referred to as the abdomen. The opisthosoma houses the two pairs of book lungs, a primitive respiratory system consisting of ventilated, leaf-like lungs through which air circulates. It also internally contains the heart, reproductive organs, and the midgut. The spinnerets can be found externally on this part of the tarantulas body. The opisthosoma can expand and contract to take in nutrients or expel eggs.Prosoma: The other main part of a tarantulas anatomy, or front section of the body that is often called the cephalothorax. The dorsal surface of the prosoma is protected by the carapace. The legs, fangs, and pedipalps all extend from the prosoma region externally. Internally, you will find the tarantulas brain, a network of muscles responsible for much of a tarantulas movement, digestive organs, and venom glands.Pedicel: An hour-glass shaped tube that joins the two primary body sectio ns, the exoskeleton or prosoma to the abdomen or opisthosoma. The pedicel contains many nerves and blood vessels internally.Carapace: A very hard, shield-like plate that covers the dorsal surface of the prosoma region. The carapace has many functions. It houses the eyes and fovea, but it is also responsible for protecting the top of the cephalothorax. The carapace is a crucial part of the exoskeleton of a tarantula and its covering of hairs also functions as an effective defense mechanism.Fovea: A dimple on the dorsal surface of the prosoma, or more specifically, the carapace. Many of a tarantulas muscles are fixed to this important feature, including its stomach muscles. The fovea is also called the foveal groove. Its size and shape determine how the tarantulas limbs will move.Ocular tubercle: A small mound on the dorsal surface of the prosoma which holds the tarantulas eyes. This bump is located on the rigid carapace. Tarantulas usually have eight eyes. Though famously ineffective for vision, tarantula eyes may help them to calculate distance or take in polarized light.Chelicerae: Jaws or system of mouthparts that house the venom glands and fangs, which are used for envenoming prey. These are fastened on the front of the prosoma and are quite large. Tarantulas primarily use their chelicerae for eating and hunting.Pedipalps: Sensory appendages. Although they resemble shorter legs, pedipalps are just designed to help tarantulas to feel their environment. Theà pedipalps usually have only one claw each, compared to their true legs that each contain two claws. In males, the pedipalps are also used for sperm transfer.Legs: A tarantulas true legs each have two claws on the tarsus (foot). Setae, or the coarse hairs also covering the carapace, can be found on each of the legs and these also help the tarantula to feel their environment and sense danger or prey. A tarantula has four pairs of two legs, or eight legs total, containing seven segments each.Spinnerets: Si lk-producing structures. Tarantulas have two pairs of these appendages and they extend mostly into the abdomen. Tarantulas use silk to defend themselves against threats and create webs for shelter. Brutality And Inequality In United States - Free Essay Example
Sample details Pages: 7 Words: 2085 Downloads: 3 Date added: 2019/04/02 Category Society Essay Level High school Tags: Black Lives Matter Essay Did you like this example? In the United States, 72.4% percent of the population is Caucasian and 12.6% are African American, as found on worldpopulationreview.com. The difference between the two percentages is 59.8%. But why is this information useful, you may ask? Well, because African Americans are often oppressed by their white counterparts. We see news about African Americans being shot by police officers or White citizens in self defense. African Americans are being racially profiled in their daily lives, resulting in the Black Lives Matter movement. The Black Lives Matter is a necessary movement because of the brutality and inequality African Americans endure. The Black Lives Matter, also known as BLM, is an organization that is chapter-based, member-led organization whose mission is to build local power and to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes (blacklivesmatter.com). This movement was formed after the death of Trayvon Martin, a 17-year old African American. Donââ¬â¢t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Brutality And Inequality In United States" essay for you Create order Since the Black Lives Movement, there has been an increase in awareness of racial profiling, resulting in prison and worse, death. According to Google, racial profiling is defined as the use of race or ethnicity as grounds for suspecting someone of having committed an offense. Black Lives Matter: A Call to Action for Counseling Psychology Leaders, written by Candice Hargons, talks about the Black Lives Matter movement and racial injustice. She writes in the article that in 2015 Black people were killed at more than twice the rate of non-Latino white people, and Black men were nine times more likely to die at the hands of police officers(Hargons 875). In the same year, statistics also showed that police shot and killed 36 unarmed black males, as in Nationwide, police shot and killed nearly 1,000 people in 2017 by John Sullivan. In Nikole Hannah-Jones article called, Taking Freedom: Yes, Black American fears the Police. Heres Why, she talks about an incident in her local town involving a mentally ill man and two officers. At the height of the BLM, tensions were high and many African Americans were upset and hurt with all of the killings. The mentally ill man shot two police officers, making matters worse. As Nikole and her husband, both African American, went to the precinct where the two officers worked, and was not greeted by the officers at the front desk, They were only acknowledged after her husband broke the silence. The very next day, she drove by the precinct again and saw metal barricades as well as two helmeted officers [that] stood sentry out front, gripping big black assault rifles, and watching. The officers werent the re to protect the city or the people, they were standing outside to protect themselves (Hannah-Jones). This action goes to show that they believe that African Americans were going to cause another crime. Philip Smith, the president of the National African-American Gun Association, feels the stereotype that African Americans receive. Smith said, When you walk up to a situation as an officer, I think a lot of times theres an assumption that the black guy is the issue or the problem, Smith said. When you have those stereotypes that are ingrained in your mind, it can be a death warrant for a lot of our black men, unfortunately (Eligon) BLM was first organized after an African American 17-year old named Trayvon Martin was fatally shot while on the way to the local convenience store to buy a drink and sweets in Sanford, Florida. What happened the night Trayvon Martin died written by Greg Botelho, goes into further detail about the night of the incident. His shooter, George Zimmerman was assigned to be the head volunteer neighborhood watch after there was an increase in crime in the neighborhood. According to Trayvon Martin Biography, the teenager was staying with his father and his girlfriend after he was given a school suspension for the third time. The night that Martin was shot, he was wearing a black hoodie, with the hoodie over his head. Reports show that Zimmerman called the local police to report about a guy that looks like hes up to no good, or hes on drugs or something. Its raining, and hes just walking around, and was told to stay in the vehicle he was in (Botelho). Instead of staying in the vehicle, Zimmer man decided to take matters into his own hands and confront the young teen. No one truly knows what happened during the confrontation, however, as we know, it lead to the death of Trayvon Martin. Once the public heard about this shooting, tables turned and they werent happy. Zimmerman was initially not charged with murder as he said it was self-defense, but it wasnt until a public outcry that Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter (Botelho). An incident similar to the killing of Trayvon Martin is the shooting of Jordan Davis, also a 17-year old African American boy. According to an article written by Kristal Brent Kook called, The Lessons of Jordan Daviss Murder, Revisited Jordan Davis and 3 of his friends stopped at a gas station to purchase gum and cigarettes before heading to the local mall on November 23, 2012. Davis and his friends were approached by 45-year old Michael Dunn, who was in a vehicle with his fiance. Dunn and his fiance were in the Jacksonville area to attend his sons wedding. The 45-year old has asked the teenagers to turn down the music in their car as it was loud. Initially, they did turn down the music. However, Davis was tired of people telling me what to do, and turned the music back up. Davis and Dunn exchanged words, cursing and yelling at each other. According to the testimony of Davis friends Dunn asked, Are you talking to me? again putting his car window down. Youre not going to talk to me th at way. Dunn then took matters into his own hands by reaching into his glove compartment for a pistol then fired ten shots into the boys car. As much as Dunn had been upset about the situation, there was no need to fire 10 shots at a vehicle with 4 young teens. While in court, Dunns fiance Rouer recalls him telling her that he ..hate[d] that thug music. Dunn then goes on to say that he wouldve never said thug music, instead, he wouldve said rap crap. Dunn was later found guilty and sentenced 75 years in prison without parole (Kook). A recent incident that has caught attention of the public happened on Thanksgiving in a Birmingham, Alabama mall. According to Black Man Killed by Officer in Alabama Mall Shooting Was Not the Gunman, Police Now Say by Mihir Zaveri, shoppers were making their way around the store, enjoying the extended hours and Black Friday deals stores had to offer. It was then around 9:52 p.m. when there were reports of gunshots. By the time the altercation was done, 21-year old Emantic Fitzgerald Bradford Jr. was fatally shot by the police who responded to the scene. It was first reported by the Hoover Police Department on Twitter that Bradford may have been involved [with the shooting] in some aspect (Zaveri) However, it was later then found that Bradford was not involved with the shooting. As the incident happened just recently, not much information has been released about. however, according to an article written by Daniel Victor called Black Man Killed by Police in Alabama Was Shot From Behind , Autopsy Shows his family said, Emantic Fitzgerald Bradford Jr. pulled out a gun and rushed to protect shoppers. Witnesses of the incident later confirmed this and commented that Bradford, was directing shoppers to safety (Victor). When autopsy reports came out, it showed that he was running away [from the scene] and posed no threat to the officer who shot him (Victor). This shows the stereotype that police officers have on African Americans. The officers should have questioned Bradford first before firing shots that would ultimately end his life. Living in the United States, African Americans fear for their lives. The reason why African Americans are fearing for their lives is because young black men are 21 times more likely to be shot and killed by police than young white men as well as face ongoing everyday slights and indignities at the hands of police (Hannah-Jones). The likelihood of a black man being shot is just way too high, higher than it should be. Compared to an African American, the chances of a White person to be shot is 2.9 out of a million, less than 1%. A majority of the White people do not know how privileged they are, something called white privilege. According to Urban Dictionary, white privilege is the perceived societal privilege that benefits people whom society identifies as white. As they unconsciously have this privilege, they do not have to worry about being stopped at a traffic stop or be scared for their lives on the streets of their town. White people, by and large, do not know what it is like to be occupied by a police force. They dont understand it because it is not the type of policing they experience (Hannah-Jones). Black Lives Matter started out as a hashtag that was initially used after the death of Trayvon Martin to show anger and injustice. The hashtag was used on many social media sites, but was predominately used on Twitter. Rashawn Ray wrote an article called, Ferguson and the death of Michael Brown on Twitter: #BlackLivesMatter, #TCOT, and the evolution of Collective identities to talk about the correlation social media has to the BLM. In the article, it states Twitter was an echo chamber to the movement. Echo chambers lead to territorial desegregation, polarization, and isolation and highlight how people obtain and use information to build communities where their majority position is represented (Ray 1799). The movement also refers to an ideological and political intervention in a world where Black lives are systematically and intentionally target for demise. It is an affirmation of Black folks contributions to this society, our humanity, and our resilience in the face of deadly oppress ion'(qoted by Garza, 877). As much as BLM protests and promotes equality, and injustice, they also strive to reduce internalized racism and its consequences. They promote self-love, collective efficacy, increased joy, as well as resilience (Hargons). With all of this information, we can not say that there is no brutality and inequality that African Americans are faced with on a daily basis. As all of these incidents are happening to African Americans, it makes one wonder what would happen if roles were reversed. What wouldve happened if Trayvon Martin was a white teenager? What if Emantic Fitzgerald Bradford Jr. was a white male carrying a gun, trying to help innocent people escape? If Michael Dunn was 45-year old African American man shooting at 4 teenage Caucasian boys listening to pop music (Zook)? Would the events be handled in a different way? Citations Botelho, Greg. Case Analysis Ford Corporation Free Essays
string(44) " standing on its two feetâ⬠\(Chapman, pp\." Case Analysis: Ford Motor Company Global Strategic Management March 4, 2013 Ford Motor Company: Organization Profile Ford Motor Company Staying ââ¬Å"Ford Toughâ⬠Henry Ford established the auto company in June 16, 1903. An engineer by formation, Henry had a vision of making vehicles that would change society. He wanted to offer an affordable product to the public, one that his own workers could buy. We will write a custom essay sample on Case Analysis: Ford Corporation or any similar topic only for you Order Now His vision took him to model T in 1908, and to improve the manufacturing process with the conveyor belt at Fordââ¬â¢s Highland plant. The manufacturing capabilities kept on improving and in 1917 he built the Rouge plant that put the whole operation, from the raw material, to the final product, under the same roof. In 1915 Henry Fordââ¬â¢s son, Edsel Ford joined his father in the company. Edsel brought to the company the desire of making a product not only functional, but stylish and beautiful. Ford became entirely family owned in 1919 when Henry, his wife Clara, and Edsel bought the outstanding shares for $105,820,894 (Chapman, pp. 128) . The company would hold to this status until 1956 when the company would allow outsiders to buy shares. For many years the image of the company was the same as its leadership. Henry Ford passed the presidency to Edsel Ford in 1919. Henry Ford reassumed the leadership after the death of Edsel in 1943. After Henry Ford resigned, Henry Ford II assumed the presidency. The company inherited by Henry Ford II was not the same. Ford had fallen behind General Motor (GM) and Chrysler. Henry Ford II knew he had to regain terrain, so he contracted the Whiz Kids (a group of former US Army Air Force officers), and created a ââ¬Å"sophisticated management system including accounting and financial controlsâ⬠(Chapman, pp. 28). With the finance side in check, Ford gained increased its position, and became the number 2 car company in 1950. Ford products were not fuel efficient, and when the gas prices rose in the 70s because of the OPEC embargo, Ford lost many consumers. The company responded by closing plants and cutting jobs. After the storm, the sun came out in the late 80s with the launch of F ord Taurus and Mercury Ford was on the top of the game once again. The desire to diversify made Ford buy other brands and include it in its family such as: Jaguar, Aston Martin, Land Rover and Volvo. Bill Ford assumed the presidency of the company in 2001. It was the first time in 20 years that the head of the company was a member of the Ford family. Bill Ford drove the company through one of the worst times in history for the company: right after the extensive (and expensive) Firestone tires recall, and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. Bill Ford went to ups and downs during his presidency. He saw sales improving slowly from 2001 to 2006, but the increasing competition from foreign brands such as Toyota, Nissan and Honda made him realize that he needed help taking the company to the next level. Alan Mulally became the new CEO in 2006. He was a new face in the auto industry, coming from Boeing Corporation instead from inside Ford or from another auto company. Mulally ââ¬Å"demonstrated leadership skills Henry Ford had established many years ago. â⬠Mulally brought to the company new energy, and a brave new plan. His most risky decision proved to pay off in the end. He decided to raise money by mortgaging almost all of Fordââ¬â¢s assets including the brand. His audacity put Ford as the most trustworthy American company. The money raised by Mulally helped keep Ford out of the government bailout of 2009. Ford Motor Company: The Problem(s) Ford has been a pioneer in the auto industry but it still faces a lot of problems to make it the number one in the industry. The increasing competition from other car companies to creatively and efficiently attract and retain customers made it difficult to gain the number one position. The economic crisis also made it hard to sell new vehicles. The quality of Ford vehicles have also gone down compared to what it was before. The slow reaction to change in consumer taste made Ford lag behind its main competitors. It was also late in expanding in international market and opportunities were lost to other brands. Ford Motor Company: SWOT Analysis Strengths One of Fordââ¬â¢s biggest strengths is its leadership. Since Henry Ford founded the company, the leadership has been proven to help the company throughout difficult times. Every leader brought to the company a new idea. Henry Ford wanted the company to produce an affordable product. His successor, Edsel showed that innovation is always necessary in this industry. Edsel wanted stylish and beautiful vehicles to carry the Ford brand. Henry Ford II with he help of the Whiz Kids developed a ââ¬Å"sophisticated management systemâ⬠what helped the company after World War II. He also ââ¬Å"revitalized Ford with modern engineering, manufacturing, assembly, and distribution facilities in the US and 22 foreign countriesâ⬠(Chapman, pp. 128). The strong and visionary leadership style of Henry Ford was shared by many other leaders of Ford. T he new generation, Bill Ford and Alan Mulally also presented the traits of a Ford leader. Bill by navigating Ford throughout harsh times, and for seeing that the company needed a change, a fresh start. He then passed the leadership of the company to Alan Mulally who proved to be exactly what the company needed. Mulally discovered that Ford lacked ââ¬Å"global synergy,â⬠he was surprised by the way that Ford was operating its brands. He saw that the company did not have central control, it took him a while to find out what was really happening inside the company. He also made really tough financial decisions, and reorganized the amount of brands and models offered by Ford. ââ¬Å"With his leadership and conviction, Ford Motor Company stood apart from its competitors by standing on its two feetâ⬠(Chapman, pp. You read "Case Analysis: Ford Corporation" in category "Essay examples" 33). Fordââ¬â¢s reputation is also an incredible strength for the company. Ford is seen as a family company. Henry Ford wants the employees to be able to buy cars, increased their wages, and was interested in sharing a piece of his family with others. Weaknesses Ford has proven to be slow to r espond to changes in the environment and consumer tastes. They felt that they ââ¬Å"got it,â⬠and felt comfortable with it. Since the beginning of Ford, with a delay to offer cars in other colors than black, they experience a tardiness to respond to changes. One example was the excessive attention to SUVs and other gas inefficient cars when the gas prices spiked. When consumers were looking for alternatives to the gas drinking vehicles, Ford was fully producing SUVââ¬â¢s. Although SUVââ¬â¢s are Ford bestselling product, the fact that they were slow to make them more efficient or give costumers other styles to choose from, made Ford to lose market share to other automakers. Ford also lost terrain when they did not address earlier the ecofriendly trend. Toyota had the Prius which did not have much of a competition until recently. Currently, Ford has ââ¬Å"12 vehicles with best in class fuel economy and 4 models with at least 40 mpgâ⬠(Chapman, pp. 137), and is developing plug-in models that use a combination of electricity and gasoline that will compete against the Chevrolet Volt. Opportunities Ford has the opportunity to expand its presence and capture market share in India and China. It aims to increase its revenues from international sales from 20 percent to 50 percent. The expanding market of the two countries allows Ford to focus on small, light and fuel efficient cars that are needed in the market. Ford has also been slow to respond to demands for small hybrid or fuel efficient cars in the United States. There is also an opportunity to increase standardization of the platforms used in world-wide production of vehicles. If this happens the cost of production would significantly lower and it would be easier to introduce new cars into new markets without building new plants. Ford can also further trim down the number of models out in the market and focus on cars they are widely known for such as light trucks and expand its model for smaller and fuel efficient cars. To target the higher end market, it should continue to build its Lincoln brand as a better alternative in the US and once established, export that brand to new markets overseas. Production from union controlled plants could also be transferred to non-union plants that can give Ford plants a competitive edge or be at par with other auto companies in compensation for workers. Ford can also consolidate more dealership to become more competitive and give them incentives to attract more customers thru financing and offering excellent customer service. Threats The auto industry is very competitive and technology driven industry. Ford has to constantly monitor its competitors to know how it will make its own decision. Companies will outbid one another in attracting new customers by giving them a lot of rebates, incentives and attractive financing. The technology for clean, fuel-efficient cars and alternate sources of fuel is also changing and without proper funding for research Ford could be left behind and lose in this expanding market. Any increase in price of raw materials could also increase production cost for Ford and make their vehicles more expensive. Demands of union workers also affect the competitiveness of Ford. They are currently paying higher compensation and benefits compared to the rest of auto industry. Changing consumer tastes also makes it difficult for Ford to quickly address and create cars that the market needs. Any decline in the US economy would also greatly affect the revenues of Ford. Most of the revenues of Ford comes from the US market and if the US economy goes into another recession it would decrease consumer spending and make it difficult to survive without government help. Ford Motor Company: Five Forces Threats of Substitute Products ââ¬â High in Urban Areas, Low in Suburban Areas * With the increase of gas prices and traffic congestion consumers are now looking for alternate ways to commute between work and home. Consumers are increasingly being aware of their ââ¬Å"carbon footprintâ⬠and are looking for clean and energy efficient alternatives to commute. In cities, the availability of public tr ansportation such as buses, subways and light rail systems gives commuters flexibility. Car-sharing options such as Zipcar are now also available in cities and have become popular. Rivalry Among Competing Firms ââ¬â High * Competition in the auto industry is very high. Different companies compete aggressively in increasing their market share by giving incentives to customers. It is also important for companies to satisfy the needs and tastes of consumers. Companies also try to run an efficient supply chain to limit the cost of producing and increasing profit margins. * Threats of New Entrants ââ¬â Low * The threat of new entrants in the local auto industry is low. The auto industry is very capital and labor intensive and it takes time for companies to establish their operations. The current companies have established their presence and market share but competition from potential, new and growing car companies in big markets such as China and India is inevitable. * Bargaining Power of Suppliers ââ¬â Low * The auto industry sources its raw materials from global suppliers. The suppliers market is also a competitive industry. Bulk of their sales come from the auto industry and companies have established relationships to give them access to supplies and new technologies. The relationship of auto ompanies and suppliers are intertwined given that as auto companies increase production, supplier companies increase revenues. * Bargaining Power of Buyers ââ¬â High * Consumers now have more choices that gives them a higher bargaining power. The economy is also improving and giving them more buying power. Unlike before where manufacturers dictate what the dealers will push to the consumers, consumers now make the demand for manufacturers to make fuel-efficient an d environment friendly cars. Consumers are also well informed and by being well informed they can ask for more incentives to dealers and car manufacturers. Ford Motor Company: Recommendations Under the leadership of Mulally Ford has significantly made changes to improve the position of the company. We recommend that Ford increase funding on research for fuel efficient cars, alternate sources of energy for smaller cars that the market demands and will create sustainability in its vehicles. Ford should also maintain or increase the quality of its vehicles by standardizing its platforms and improving its technology to detect any safety issues with its vehicles to avoid costly recalls that not only is expensive but tarnishes the image of the company. The economic crisis has made it difficult for other car companies not to be bailed out but Ford was able to maintain its independence by using its assets and enforcing better control in its finances. Ford can continue to be competitive by maintaining or lowering its operating costs. Ford has been known in its proficiency in having a tight supply chain were it can control the costs of production. Ford should be quick to adapt in changing consumer tastes. It should not be content with making products that they are known for and lose market share in new vehicles that are small, clean and fuel efficient. It should also make its current models cleaner and more fuel efficient to maintain attractiveness to consumers. Ford has great potential in new markets such as China and India. The reputation it has built as a well know car manufacturer in the US can be used to tap new customers in international market. Ford has built by its strong leaders and will continue to thrive if more reforms are made. How to cite Case Analysis: Ford Corporation, Essay examples

History of asian immagration to the U.S Research Paper
History of asian immagration to the U.S - Research Paper Example An understanding of the history as well as the reasons for the rampant immigrations has been a major concern for all people in the world. Indeed, several contributing factors are evident (Fowler, 2007). The emigration policies that had been set in each of the Asian countries, and their relationship with the immigration policies at work in the United States has been a long term factor that contributing to the Asian immigration into the American countries. The second rationale en tails the linkage between the United States and the Asian countries in relation to economical, political, social, as well as military linkages. A third migration cause is the aspect of globalization, in the fact that the world has been modified recently to appear like a small city where people can move to and fro. Analysis of novels and their films Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words - 1
Analysis of novels and their films - Essay Example For example, Peter Shafferââ¬â¢s Amadeus, the 1984 film directed by MiloÃ
¡ Forman and adapted from Shafferââ¬â¢s stage play, differs greatly from the original version of the story and the character development in the play and the film differs to the highest degree. The story of the movie and the film based loosely on the lives of two composers who lived in Vienna, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri, has significant variations between the film version and the play. Similarly, the character development in the movie and the play fluctuates hugely mainly due to the adaptation technique, and Shafferââ¬â¢s further revisions of his text. In a reflective analysis of the changes that the character of Salieri undergoes on his way from stage to screen, it becomes evident that the director of such a film version of a literary piece often brings about drastic changes by reason of the adaptation techniques of the film. Thus, the screen Salieri is Shafferââ¬â¢s final and most ingenious version of this dark and tragic character, the Oscar-winning F. Murray Abraham superbly casts this character. it has been maintained that the character of Salieri remains the motivating force at the core of the action in the film, although Mozartââ¬â¢s personality has been considerably expanded. Significantly, the changes made in the film can be comprehended as the logical continuation of the changes that Shaffer had already made between the London and New York productions of his play. ââ¬Å"The most important of those changes was the removal of Salieriââ¬â¢s servant Greybig who played the part of the masked figure in place of Salieri.â⬠(The characters in the play and the film) As Shaffer recognized that the presence of Greybig meant more disadvantages than benefits, changes were made in the film version Salieri himself replaces this character as the agent of destruction in the film. Therefore, there are several marked alterations made by the film version of the play which

Modernism vs Postmodernism Graphic Design
Modernism vs Postmodernism Graphic Design Throughout the 19th century artists and painters had a very conservative mindset when it came to the presentation of art. The images and art forms that were made during this time were composed of a certain artistic mold which reflected conservative moral values, virtuosity, righteousness, nobility, sacrifice, and Christianityà [1]. Most artists during this time period conformed to the common artistic mold, which is clearly seen in the works of that century. The 20th century however, saw a new period of design known as modernism, which would eventually lead to postmodernism after World War II. Unlike the artworks of the 19th century, the modernist and postmodernist periods were composed of very revolutionary and transformed images. The ideas and opinions behind the images became more open-minded and hence the images themselves were more flexible and avant-gardeà [2]. The period of modernism saw the partial abandonment of conservative traditions. Modern artists looked ahead to the future and not to the past, they supported freedom of expression and equality. The years between World War I and World War II allowed modernism to expand dramatically. Propaganda and war posters are perfect examples of modernismà [3]. Not only did modern artists provide social awareness; they also actively supported political revolutions, such as the Russian Revolution. The Russian revolution provided and excellent opportunity for modern artists to experiment with new expression methods. The posters and propaganda of this revolution in particular were very abstract and futuristic, almost industrial; all of which fitted the Soviet ideologyà [4]. A very important historical piece of modernism is its emergence in Germany. Typography in German graphic design was very important, Bauhaus for example used very specific typography and rules but more importantly analyzed the specific roles of items to transmit information. It is interesting that modernism was also seen in German graphic design as some critics believe that World War II effectively drew an end to the true spirit of modernismà [5]. Keeping in mind the social and political background of modernism, the actual graphical aspects of modernist design make sense. Modernist images were generally very symmetrical and alignment was very important. Images were structured and simplified; fonts were arranged in very specific manners to complement the images themselves. Fonts were generally simple such as sans serif or sometimes looked almost hand drawn. Also popular in modernist graphic designs were the use of rules and empty space as components of the works structure. The famous Uncle Sam and Britons recruitment poster of World War I are simplified images, with very basic font. In both posters the images and fonts are arranged according to a grid, and as such they are very leveled and aligned. An interesting point in both posters is the font is different for the word you, it is bolded and outlined providing more emphasis on the importance of the person reading it. These are only brief descriptions of many similar works of the modernist time periodà [6]. Following World War II and what some consider the end of modernism a new form of graphic design materialized this is known as postmodernism. This period time started sometime in the 1950s and continues today. Some consider postmodernism to be a movement against modernism. While modernism was more pure, rational and truthful postmodernism was more chaotic and stylized, it no longer had such deep meaning behind the designs. Postmodernism uses symbols, images, and typography as simple stylistic devices. Unlike the structural and simple modernist designs, postmodernist design is obsessed with style and creativity, basically looks. Graphic design was now being presented in popular media in the same methods as fashion; it was up-to-date, advanced, and tastefulà [7]. This time period included the Cuban Revolution and of course the Vietnam War, both of which allowed artist to create interesting works of graphic design. The technical aspects of postmodernist graphic designs were very different from those of modernist design despite having some similarities. Postmodernist design included collages, photography, some hand-drawn images, and in general more chaotic and improvised arrangements. The postmodernism period also witnessed the dawn of a new age. The development of the computer and continuing ingenuity in technology presented new opportunities and new methods for graphic design. Technological developments, particularly in communications also brought forth the possibilities of mass media and culture. Graphic designers were now able to apply their craft to Television, Radio, Print, Mass Marketing, Advertising, and eventually the Internet. A particular aspect of mass media and culture where the differences and similarities between modernist and postmodernist graphic design can be seen is Music, more specifically the artwork of the album covers. The following examples are fine illustrations of the different design types. The modernist designed album cover is Elvis Presleys self-titled debut album Elvis Presley, while the postmodernist designed album cover is the Rolling Stones Exile on Main St. Elvis Presley, Elvis Presley 1956 Elvis Presleys self-titled debut album was released in March on 1956; to this day it remains one of the greatest and most iconic album covers of all time according to Rolling Stone magazineà [8]. Several artists have borrowed and mimicked the album cover, including The Clash which used it for their 1979 album London Calling which coincidently is also on Rolling Stones greatest album cover list. It is amazing how iconic the album cover is despite its shear simplicity, a simple photograph with the title Elvis Presley in very basic font and colors. Following the modernist guidelines the title is arranged in a right angle, and the font is completely legible. The artists intent was clear simplicity, legibility, and yet enough color and contrast to peak interest. Having the font in color and the background photo in black in white directs the viewers immediately to reading the title and then the image. The artwork also has a more personal and playful aura due to the particular choice of the colorful and humorous font. This may have been aimed to give the public a feeling of trust and personal acquaintance with Elvis. Another album cover that seems to be very similar to this is the Thelonius Monk 1965 album cover, it shares the simplicity of font and the photo as the background. The qualities of this album cover are clearly modernistic, extremely different when compared to the following sample of postmodern graphic design. Rolling Stones, Exile on Main St 1972 Similar to Elvis Presleys debut album, Exile on Main St, is #5 on Rolling Stones 100 Greatest Album Coversà [9]. Released in 1972 the designer of the cover John Van Hamersveldà [10], best described the attitudes of the time The general tone of the time was one of anarchy drug dealers and freaks and crazy people left over from the Sixties, all defiant and distorted. This album cover perfectly captured that feeling, the unique background and the title looking like it was a last minute thought perfectly capture the whole basis of postmodernism. The background itself has an interesting story, though it may look like a collage of photos it is actually a single photo of a poster that Hamersveld found in a tattoo parlor off route 66. Unlike the Elvis Presley album cover this one plainly shows little or no structure, it is more chaotic. An analysis of Elvis Presleys debut album cover and the Rolling Stones Exile on Main St album cover, presents dramatic differences not only in the graphic design but also the historical tone of the time. The modernist design of Elvis album cover is simple, clear, and direct; the postmodernist design of the Rolling Stones album cover is chaotic, stylish, eye-catching, and rebellious. Yet both albums are designed for one thing to attract the viewers, listeners, and fans alike. In the end it is obvious that both modernism and postmodernism are still important to this day. Thought they may be very different at times, the ultimately share a goal, to be artistic and creative.

Tiger Mon Equal to Children Success in Future
The . issue . of . whether . a . tiger . mum . equals . a . better . future . has . aroused . a . wide . debate . in our community recently. The . news . recently . reported . that Asian tiger parents also called Chinese-style version of parenting, struggle much effect to children. However, I disagree with the above statement, in this essay; I will explain the reasons and conclude that the tiger mom is equal to better future for their children. The background is that it has been argued that a tiger mom cannot lead students for a better future. In fact, a tiger mom can be a role model to their children.Parents can guide their children in their growth, their personal development, as well as building up their right value which can lead them to a better future. Chinatown American parents often focus on educational achievement, personality, personal accomplishment, and problem solving skills. With these aspects, they have high expectations of their children, for example, children are expe cted to master various musical instruments, and succeed in everything. Every parent would like to cultivate all the good things and values to their children when they are still innocent. This is why the name of ââ¬Å"tiger parentsâ⬠comes from, in another word ââ¬Å"strict parentsâ⬠. Outstanding academic results can set up good career aspects in the future, no matter if it is in Hong Kong or western countries, not only in manufacturing-based or service-based career. TheBigGreen (2012) showed that in the top-level schools, 90 percent of children have an outstanding parent who plans a strict and harsh timetable for their children. It is shown that when a child enrolls in a high-level institution can refer to a minority who have a tiger parent. The strict parents will plan a full schedule for children to learn extra knowledge and practical skills. Focusing on academic achievements, their parents will arrange many tutorials for them to excel in exams. In order to reach the tar get and be the top student in the school, their children might get high GPA or obtain a Deanââ¬â¢s List, which must be beneficial to them in future career. When you have succeeded in your academic field, getting a high CGPA in every term, you may have a chance to have placement or internship in worldwide enterprises. In addition, with higher education level, the children can be professionals in different social statuses, and also lead to social progress. Another reason why strict-parenting is a better way for a childââ¬â¢s future is that they give the child pleasure. In childhood, developing the proper social network, personal accomplishment, and respective interpersonal skills is necessary for their social activities, such as, table etiquette, social dancing, and classical music and so on. At the same way, the aggressive parents plan a timetable for their children to learn different musical instruments.Participating in the class, children can make more new friends from differe nt top-level schools. The parents will filter undesirable friends and build the proper social network in childrenââ¬â¢ s institution level and personal accomplishment. All these can be contributed in future career. Since if you need any support, your social network can be your consultant teams and help you deal with the problems. Moreover, learning a musical instrument in childhood, it could mater some kinds of long-term training. The child will feel pleasure when they can master something and be confident to perform well on the stage in the future. It is because they were always used to practice a lot and join various Royal Conservatory of Music examinations, which need to perform in the auditorium. When they feel pleasure under the strict parenting method, it will not cause any mental and physical effects in the future. Another reason is that tiger mom method training children are more target-oriented, and also well-organized and well-planning.Shane (2013) reported that Vaile an alyzing when a child , who is more well-planned, will be more sensitive about the social issue and critical thinking. In another word, it means that an aggressive parenting guides the children to plan and schedule. With the result of well-planning, children can be equipped with multiple perspectives and make decent conversation. On the other hand, Chinese proverbs, ââ¬Å"success required hard workâ⬠, nothing comes from reaping without sowing. The parents help their children develop the habit from childhood, things must be planned in advance.Since they were used to do anything on schedule and on time in childhood, it caused them struggling their future works and everyday-life in the future. When in the future, you must be facing something unexpected, before the work start, you can imagine the situation and procedures in many possibilities. So you can prepare the contingency measures to solve those problems. Nonetheless, many people may have a misconception about ââ¬Å"tiger mu mâ⬠, which is only exploiting and maltreating children. However, the meaning of ââ¬Å"tiger mumâ⬠and ââ¬Å"strict parentâ⬠is that parents can guide their child to the right ways to be succeed in all fields. Parentsââ¬â¢ and Childrenââ¬â¢s Internal Conflicts (2012) insist that parents experienced . much . more . internal . conflict . in . pushing . their . children . to . success, . and . the . tiger . parents . kind . of . guilty . for . putting . children . through . the . top-level . institution. .Besides, most of the people may think that freedom, social skills and creativities may also be crushed by this type of harsh parenting. This is another misunderstanding concept. It is not true that strict parenting will cause external side-effects on mental and physical in the future. Undoubtedly, aggressive parenting style puts high-pressure on their children's childhood, but it can lead them to build up high-pressure resistant, blame resistant characteristics und er their guiding. In future, they could bear heavy workload, more missions and projects, and be more flexible to suit in different challenging situations. This is a sharpened competitiveness and strength which can excel with others. Additionally, children could further understand themselves and find self-image, value and esteem, reflecting when parents disciplining. The tiger mom may have a role model and guide the child to be successful, the benefit is more than the harmful effects to the children. The misunderstanding can be clarified by the fact. In consequence, even though the tiger mom approach is equal to a better future for children, it should not be black and white.Tiger parents build up a proper value to their children and teach them many things which could be used in future, like personality, personal accomplishment, and problem solving skills. Moreover, they plan the most meaningful and useful schedules for children, in order to have success in educational fields. Some ins ist that strict parenting might damage childhood; however, this is a misconception. The reason why the parents are only to guide children keep in rules, instill proper value, and leading them to self-reflection. With all bove conditions, ââ¬Å"tiger momâ⬠or ââ¬Å"strict-parenting styleâ⬠is not a harmful thing to children. Reference list Courtney Rivette. (2012). The Controversy Behind ââ¬Å"Tiger Momsâ⬠. Social Policy is a Pluralistic Process. - 973 Words
Introduction This assignment deals with the significance involvement of the pluralistic process in making of social policy. The essay is divided into four main sections. It will first define the key terms as: social policy, pluralism, welfare; and describe the role of the social policy, pluralism, but also to make connection between this terms and their ideology. It will then go on to consider how social policy gets made; it can assess the extent to which different ideas actually become social policy. The different models will help to judge the relative influence of different groups with their different ideas. The third part compares the early social policy with the contemporary social policy and the pluralism with the other ââ¬ËPower Modelsââ¬â¢ of democracy in practice. Finally, some conclusions will be drawn as to sum up the main points of the essay presented and toke a particular position to express some of my opinions. Main Body First of all ââ¬Ësocial policy entails the study of the social relations necessary for human wellbeing and the systems by which wellbeing may be promotedââ¬â¢ (Dean, 2006: 1). A more explicit description is that social policy is a policy that deals with various social issues. Such issues may involve cultures, discrimination against race and gender and diseases that are stigmatized among many others. Normative pluralism is considered not to be as radical as the belief of a fundamentalist pluralist. Formally, a normative pluralist assumes that there is a plurality of bearers of value (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, 2011). This optical amplification is started from some emission but it is not exposed yet until Albert Einstein proposed in 1916. After that, the things became more seriously after 1954 when Townes and Arthur Schawlow also with Gordon Gould proposed laser action, then not long after 4 years, in 1960, first laser was build by Theodore Maiman. Besides that, Gordon also derived the word laser from ââ¬Å"light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiationâ⬠. The laser developer look amplification is very important as a step to build a laser, so these people make one advance to develop amplifiers from semiconductor laser to be used as light sources. This is because of semiconductor have high gain. Laser made up with high gain and low noise isâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This is because maybe due to this erbium doped fiber amplifiers can amplify signals at the low loss. This type also is suitable to be use in long-haul and have low noise. Besides that, it also have wide spectral b and amplification and it is manly useful for WDM application and itââ¬â¢s have relative flat gain ( 20 dB). In contrast, there are some disadvantage using this type which is includes it is not easily integrated with other devices because it is relatively large device (km length of fiber). Diagram 3 : A Erbium doped fiber Amplifier The Optical gain in Optical amplifier can be defined as the ratio of the optical signal power at the input to the optical signal power at the output. This can de also shown by the formula ;, G = Pin Pout The gain is basically measured in dB and exist in the range of the 10 until 30 dB. Noise figure is the measure of the signal-to- noise ratio between input and output of the component. In other words, Noise Figure (NF) . It is a measure of how much a devices such as amplifier degrades the signal to noise ratio (SNR). During amplification process, noise exist, so the output signal is always noisier from input signal. So, in order to get better performance of optical amplifier, Noise figure should be kept as low as possible. Noise Figure , [dB] = 10 log10 (SNRin
